While teaching in beautiful Sanya, China Myself and Monika were sitting on these soft ivory couches located in our hotel lobby surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers. It had been a long day of teaching, and we were diffusing by having a talk and laughing. I remember Monika was to the right of me, and as usual her bubbly personality and contagious smile was just laughing and laughing. For those that don’t know Monika yet, and you will, when she laughs her whole body moves as if she is truly enjoying the laughter. Here we are, at night, laughing and crying in the middle of the lobby at the hotel. I’m the crier, I cry when I’m happy, sad, mad, or extremely joyful. I looked over at Monika and said, I want to do more. I want to give back more than we’re giving. The next five minutes will have changed our lives forever. Monika looked at me and it looked light a light bulb appeared above her head, she said ‘yes, let’s do it’. Lumina was born in those five minutes.

How five minutes can change your life

The next five minutes turned into two hours. Thoughts were exchanged, topics, people, places. We had created an organization that would help individuals all over the world. Being part of the educational system, we have both taught remotely, taught in-person, and have taught globally. You could feel the passion for this project, and it was inevitable by anyone who was watching us brainstorm in the lobby. We finally got up and walked away from the lobby as it was late and we needed to teach early the next morning. You know that feeling you have when you feel accomplished, and so happy you almost have no words for it, that was the moment we shared riding up the elevator on our way to prepare for the next day’s class.
