In the shadow of the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, a unique international partnership is unfolding. Cinque Ports Sailing, based at Dover’s historic harbour, and the Academic Solidarity Institute Foundation are joining forces to create educational and sporting opportunities that bridge the United Kingdom and Poland through the shared language of sailing.
Introduction
Behind every great partnership are people – individuals whose passion, dedication, and shared vision make extraordinary things possible. This is certainly true of the collaboration between Cinque Ports Sailing and the Academic Solidarity Institute Foundation.
Bernard Sealy is the Principal of Cinque Ports Sailing, the heart and soul of the Dover-based sailing organisation. He has built Cinque Ports Sailing into a thriving community-focused club that welcomes sailors of all ages and abilities. With years of experience in sailing instruction and club management, Bernard brings deep expertise, institutional knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to making sailing accessible to everyone.
Anna Gordon is the Coordinator at Cinque Ports Sailing, the driving force behind the day-to-day operations that keep the club running smoothly. With her attention to detail, organisational skills, and genuine warmth, Anna ensures that every sailor who comes through the club’s doors feels welcome and supported. She is the bridge between vision and reality, turning big ideas into practical, achievable programmes.
Monika is the President and Co-founder of the Academic Solidarity Institute Foundation, an organisation dedicated to building bridges through education and cultural exchange. But her journey with Cinque Ports Sailing began many years ago, long before she founded her organisation. Monika first came to Cinque Ports Sailing to grow as a sailor and gain new sailing experience. Her growth as a sailor and instructor happened side by side with the club’s own development, forging deep connections and lasting friendships that continue to this day.
Together, these three individuals represent the perfect combination of experience, vision, and execution. Their years of shared history, mutual trust, and complementary skills have made this partnership not just possible, but truly special.

A Partnership Born from Years of Trust and Friendship
Great ideas emerge from years of trust, deep friendships, and shared experiences on and off the water. Monika’s journey with Cinque Ports Sailing began years ago when she took her first steps into professional RYA sailing instruction. She started as a Dinghy Assistant, progressed to become a fully qualified Dinghy Instructor, and later earned her Powerboat 2 Licence.
“I remember Monika’s first days here,” Bernard recalls. “She started as a Dinghy Assistant, full of enthusiasm and determination. She progressed so quickly – from Assistant to Instructor, then getting her Powerboat 2 Licence. It wasn’t just about qualifications – it was about becoming the best sailor and teacher she could be.”
What Monika found was more than a place to gain qualifications – she found a community, a home, and a lasting friendship with Bernard and Anna.
“That progression all happened at Cinque Ports Sailing,” Monika says. “Bernard and the team believed in me when I was just starting out. Through all of that, we built a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. That’s what makes this partnership so special.”
Anna confirms: “Monika has always been part of the Cinque Ports Sailing family.”
When Old Friends Dream Together
The idea for the UK-Poland partnership came from conversations between old friends, sitting overlooking Dover Harbour, watching the sunset over the White Cliffs.
“We were just talking one day,” Bernard remembers. “I knew Monika had been developing her foundation, focusing on education and cultural exchange. I’d watched her grow as an instructor, as a leader. And I said, ‘We’ve been working together for years. Why don’t we do something together on a bigger scale?’”
Monika’s eyes lit up. “Every time I taught someone to sail, I saw how sailing changed people’s lives – bringing together people from different countries, backgrounds, and ages. Why not bring Polish sailors here? Why not send British sailors to Poland? Why not use sailing to build bridges?”
“We weren’t just talking about a project,” Bernard adds. “We were talking about building something lasting – creating opportunities for young people, bringing our two nations closer together, creating friendships that last a lifetime.”
Anna was naturally drawn in: “I could see the potential so clearly. Dover is already a destination for sailors from around the world – but we could do so much more to make it a truly international hub.”
“The three of us together,” Monika reflects, “we’re unstoppable. Bernard has the vision and sailing expertise. I have the educational and international connections. Anna has the charm, practical skills, and energy to make it all happen. It’s the perfect combination.”

The Vision Takes Shape
The more they talked, the bigger the vision became. They’d seen what sailing could do – how it transformed people, brought them together, taught them to trust and work as a team.
“I’ve always believed sailing is about building character, teamwork, and learning to trust others,” Monika says. “Those are exactly the values the Academic Solidarity Institute Foundation wants to promote.”
“Monika’s foundation is the perfect partner,” Bernard adds. “We needed someone to help us build the educational side, connect us with people in Poland and internationally, and create a true exchange. I know what she’s capable of – there’s no one I’d rather do this with.”
The two organisations discovered a natural alignment in their missions – the Foundation building bridges through education and cultural exchange, while Cinque Ports Sailing offers a platform for bringing people together in an active, collaborative environment.

Why Dover?
Dover offers a sailing experience like no other. The White Cliffs provide a breathtaking backdrop, while the town’s rich maritime history adds cultural depth. The sheltered harbour suits beginners, while access to the English Channel challenges experienced sailors.
“We often hear that sailing here is unforgettable,” says Bernard. “You’re experiencing a piece of British history.”
Anna adds: “The White Cliffs are breathtaking. But it’s more than that – Dover has rich maritime history. This is the gateway to England – Romans, Normans, everyone came through here.”
Adding to the appeal is the globally recognised RYA certification – with over 2,400 training centres worldwide and recognition in 58 countries.

Beyond the Water: Cultural Exchange
For Anna, the cultural dimension is key. “We want our Polish visitors to experience Dover properly – the castle, the cliff walks, the local pubs, the community spirit. It’s about the whole experience.”
When British sailors travel to Poland, they’ll discover the Masurian Lake District – thousands of lakes, endless forests, and a peaceful, connected-with-nature atmosphere.
“The Masurian Lakes are beautiful,” says Monika. “The sailing there is different, more inland, but equally magical. Participants who experience both will have a richer understanding.”
“I want our British sailors to experience Polish culture – the hospitality, the traditions, the way of life,” Bernard adds. “That’s what exchange is all about.”
A Future of Friendship and Opportunity
The partnership starts with a pilot programme: 20 people – 10 British and 10 Polish – who will sail together first in the Masurian Lakes, then in Dover.
“Start small, learn, refine, and then grow,” says Monika. “By the end of year one, we’ll have a proven model. And then… who knows? Maybe France? Croatia?”
The long-term vision is ambitious: an international sailing exchange network with Dover as a hub, connecting sailing centres across Europe and beyond. An alumni network – the “Friends of Britain and Friends of Poland” – will ensure connections last a lifetime.
“Imagine in ten years,” Anna envisions, “we’ll have a whole community of people who learned to sail together, scattered around the world, but always connected by this programme.”

More Than Just Sailing
There’s a hunger for connection and building bridges.
“This isn’t just about sailing,” Monika reflects. “It’s about building bridges, understanding each other, creating a future where people from different countries see each other as friends and partners.”
Bernard agrees: “On a boat, it doesn’t matter where you’re from or what language you speak. Age is just a number. You’re all working towards the same goal – that’s what I love about sailing.”
